World War I
World war I started in August 1914, it was triggered by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire on june28,1914, he was killed by the black hand, a Serbian nationalist secret society (Levinson, M. (2005)). The Austro-Hungarian reaction to that was that they sent a last warning to Serbia demanding that the assassins be brought to justice which was a violation to the Serbian sovereignty. Austro-Hungarian expected the rejection of Serbia to that warning which will give Austro-Hungarian an excuse to “launch a limited war against Serbia”( Levinson, M. (2005))
Russia and Serbia had a longstanding “Slavic ties”, but Austro-Hungarian government did not expect Russia to participate in that conflict more than issuing a diplomatic protest. But Austro-Hungary decided to gain Germany support under mutual alliance just in case Russia did declare war and decided to participate in the conflict rather than just issuing a diplomatic protest. Germany agreed and encouraged Austro-Hungary to go into war.
On July 28, 1914 Austro-Hungary rejected the Serbian’s replay to the last warning and declared war on Serbia. Since Serbia and Russia have bonds Russian army mobilized. Germany “viewed the Russian mobilization as an act of war against Austro-Hungary, and declared war on Russia on August 1.”( Levinson, M. (2005)) France and Russia was bonded by treaty so as a result France declared war against Germany and by extension on Austro-Hungary on 3 August. So in order to reach Paris by the shortest route, Germany invaded neutral Belgium. And on August 4 Britain declared war on Germany because they were bonded by loosely worded treaty “which implied a moral obligation to mutual defense. In addition Britain was “obligated to defend Belgium by the terms of a seventy-five-years old treaty”(Levinson, M. (2005) .So like France, Britain was in war with Austro-Hungary. Britain’s colonies (e.g Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, and the union of south Africa) offered assistance. In 1917, the policy of neutrality that United States declared ended when Germany’s “ policy of unrestricted submarine warfare seriously threatened America’s commercial shipping.”(Levinson, M. (2005). August 23 japan declared war on Germany because of its military agreement with Britain. Austro-Hungary responded by declaring war on japan two days later.
Movies in Egypt
It is so annoying that good movies which really have a message do not succeed, while on the other hand the shallow and stupid movies do succeed and people go watch it. For example, movie like H-Dabour, shallow and stupid movie got attention way more than it deserves. And on the other hand, a good and creative film like Ein Shams, that address many of the problems in Egypt did not get the attention it deserves, the majority of the people did not even know that there is a movie called Ein Shams. And that is really annoying me.
Those good and respectable movies should get the attention and appreciation they deserve and people should go watch them. I think there should be a film festival. And those respectable, well done movies should be awarded by experts to encourage the making of more creative movies which have deep meaning and respectable message. Because it became really hard to find a movie that respect the intellectuals, movies now are shallow. Also I think that all movies that are commercial meaning that they are made only to make money, not to make a movie that worth watching should be banned

SU elections
Student Union presidential elections in the A-U-C takes place every spring semester where three candidates compete to win the elections. The candidates usually do a debate so that students know their plan and decide to whom they are going to vote.
This semester the two candidates are Pansee Assem and Hesham Shafik. Hesham is a political science senior student, also he is a teaching assistant for Dr. Ezz El Arab. Hesham publicity is more organized, he has a group on facebook to present to people his experiences unlike Pansee.
A debate was held on the 15th of April 2010 for each one of them to present his plan and for people to decide according to that debate wether they are going to vote for Pansee or for Hesham.
Some people decided that they are not going to vote to either one of them. Menna Ghoniem , sophomore student said
“ I am not going to vote, because none of them really convinced me”
Others decided that they are going to vote for Pansee because she is a girl and they support the idea of having a girl as SU president. Dina Ahmed, a Sophomore student said
SU elections has been a major issue in the university some people vote for certain candidate because he/she is just his/her friend, other because some of their friends asked them for that candidate. Omar Mohamed, a shophmore student said
Mahmoud Hassan, sophomore student said
“ I am going to vote for Hesham, all my friends want me to vote for him and I really don’t care who is going to win and they do care”

Listening Journal#4
The company that produced the documentary is BBC
The narrator of the documentary is Sorious Samura
The length of the documentary is 22.15
The documentary is about the tension between Hutus and Tutsis who are the two main ethnic group in Africa. Also the documentary is talking about the mascaras that happened and about the refugees. Also is talking about the return of the refugees by the reconciliation program. Also the documentary mentioning story about some refugees. The documentary was interesting and the nat sound made it more interesting. Also leaving the original language and putting the translation as voice over made it also more interesting and more engaging. The narrator’s voice was good but sometimes it was hard to understand because of the language. The documentary was a bit long but not boring.

Women in Egypt
In Egypt, you can say that women are under microscope, every little thing they do counts. On the other hand men can do whatever they want and no cares. For example, if a woman has a boyfriend that is a shame and she is considered as a bitch, but if it is the man who has a girlfriend, he is considered a woow guy and that is considered a good thing for him, also it is his right to have a girlfriend because he is a guy.
In addition, if a guy smoked shisha or cigarettes it is ok, but if the woman is the one who smokes it is a big deal and that will make people get a bad impression on her and the society will make her feel as if she did a terrible thing.
Drinking and smoking hash is more acceptable and ok if a man is the one who is doing it because he is a guy and its ok to do so, but if it’s a woman, it’s a disgrace and she is insulting her family.
This is so unfair because in religion and I am talking about any religion, I guess there is no difference between a man and woman when it comes to punishment, they both get the same punishment for the mistakes they do. So why people. Culture and society differentiate between them when God doesn’t?
